Fasting between Orthodox spirituality and science As it is known, fasting is the total or partial abstinence or restraint from
food and drink for a limited time for religious-moral purposes. This definition
shows that the fast recommended by our Church has a specific character, in the
sense that, representing the total or partial abstinence from animal products,
dairy products, eggs, animal fats, alcoholic beverages, the fast should also
reduce the quantity of products, avoiding the paradoxical possibility of
soaking in fasting foods... Therefore, the total or partial abstinence or
restraint from food and drink aims at acquiring a modest life. And to achieve
this goal, fasting is an exercise in spiritual growth. It must be harmoniously
combined with spiritual fasting, meaning that abstinence from food is twinned
with abstinence from sin. SORIN COSMA |
